Trillgate LogoThe History of Trillgate

Trillgate is truly something totally unique, this beautiful, detached grade II listed Cotswold stone house is set in an elevated and completely private location at the head of the Slad Valley of Cider with Rosie fame.

The property is reported, by a local who recently wrote a book about the Slad Valley, to be the oldest building in the area, believed to be tudor dating back to 1500’s and it has a fascinating history.

Trillgate has been in the same family for nearly 50 years, having been bought by renowned and loved local artist, Diana Lodge, in 1962, who renovated it then from a ruin, part of the roof was missing and there were cows living in it and since then has been a much loved home for family and friends since then.

Diana, painted in a naive style, using bold colours, of local scenes. She originally gave up her training as a school teacher to become a dancer in London, and to make some extra money, she took on work as an artists' model. This lead to the meeting and marriage to an Oliver Lodge, son of the famous inventor of the variable transistor (the patent of which was sold to Marconi), the spark plug, originally called the Lodge plug and various other inventions. Oliver was part of the Bloomsbury Set and Diana Lodge modelled for Duncan Grant and Eric Gill, both part of the same set. On the death of her husband, Diana moved to Trillgate where she continued her passion for painting. Here she lived until 1998 and the house has passed from son to grand daughter since then.

the surrounding area

Trillgate is at the head of the Slad Valley enjoying spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.

Slad is a beautifully unspoilt village which includes the well known Woolpack which Laurie Lee was known to frequent, sampling many of the local beers on tap serving good homemade food with a beer garden, very popular pub. The property is in a truly isolated spot but has fantastic communications and is very convenient for a number of local centres including Stroud, Cheltenham, Cirencester, Gloucester and Painswick.

Stroud is the nearest main town with a large Sainsburys, Waitrose and large Tescos which is open late. Stroud has a mainline train station with a high speed train service to London Paddington taking approximately 90 minutes. Stroud is a market town with a vibrant and very active artistic community. It has an excellent farmers market having won national awards, serving a wide selection of locally produced foods and crafts.
